There is a town of the beautiful Amalfi Coast of Southern Italy which is so special it has a profound and lasting effect on all who visit. That town is Positano, a port from Medieval times and today a beach resort which is quite unlike any other. Sheltered by the Lattari Mountains it enjoys a wonderful mild sunny climate and perched on the hillside it has a visual appeal which is as unique as it is stunning. For a short visit or longer holiday to enjoy its considerable charms, the Positano hotels are every bit as much a part of a memorable and wholly enjoyable experience.
The town has seen some changes in its history, firstly as an important port of the Amalfi Republic and as a quiet little fishing village early in the 20th century.
Visually the town has changed little over the centuries, with the main historic attraction being the church of Santa Maria Assunta. The majolica tiled domed roof of the church can be seen from anywhere in the town and inside is a treasure with an interesting legend, an icon of the black Madonna which is said to derive from 13th century Byzantium. According to the legend, it was left there by pirates who, during a storm, feared retribution from sirens who told them 'Posa, Posa', or 'put down'. The image was taken ashore and with the storm over, was left behind.
Further attractions and sights include no less than eight 16th century defense towers and the Grotta la Porta cave, a site where prehistoric remains have been found. Inland there are further charming villages and delightful cliff walks and out to sea is the Island of Capri and other small islets which are popular excursions. There are many tours available for those who wish to experience some of the wider delights of the Amalfi Coast, Campania and beyond, but many visitors will choose to spend their time in the town itself and make the most of the beautiful beach, the terrific ambiance and the comforts of the outstanding Positano hotels.
Walking around the town is a joy since it is completely pedestrianized and there is much to soak up in terms of the little artisans crafts shops, with leather, clothing and accessories all made to a very high quality. As with most places in Italy, dining out is a particular pleasure and in Positano, the seafood reigns supreme and is usually enjoyed on a terrace looking out to sea. Many of the other facilities, cafes, bars and restaurants will be associated with the Positano hotels and these occupy some of the best architectural features of the town and in the best locations for the views and for access to the beach and other attractions.
Positano hotels range from the very exclusive five star luxury establishments to smaller hotels where accommodation is offered on a bed and breakfast basis. There are warm and welcoming guest houses too and residences and holiday villas, offering the ideal accommodation whatever the requirements and budget. Some hotels occupy stunning positions perched on the cliff face, while others will be in the heart of town amongst the busy streets and sights. A fun filled family holiday, a tranquil and secluded retreat or just a simple great base in the town; all are possible in Positano.
Certainly the luxury hotels will have the greatest level of facilities, which will incorporate everything from swimming pools and sumptuous spas to the finest dining environments. Rooms and suites will be impeccably furnished and equipped with the latest technologies in climate control and digital entertainment systems. These kinds of establishments have long attracted a certain clientele, often rich and sometimes famous, but always appreciative of the very best hospitality, facilities and services Italy can offer.
The mid range Positano hotels are ideal for families, especially those on or close to the beach, and will often have a range of family-centered facilities and activities. Most hotels will have tourist information desks and services in order for guests to get the most from their stay in the town and to access some of the main attractions in the surrounding area. Boat trips are a common way of exploring the Amalfi Coast and they are widely available. Renting a villa is a great option for families too, who want their own space and home from home comforts and facilities.
Many Positano hotels fit into the boutique hotel category and very special ones at that. Often in the heart of the town and occupying great old buildings they certainly have the visual appeal so prized amongst such accommodation options and they will have all best elements of personal service too and guest rooms, beautifully designed and equipped in an original and distinctive style. These types of hotel are ideal for couples or anyone who wants individuality and style reflecting the the culture of the town and in the heart of the action.
